What Is Mock Location on Android?

A clear explanation of Android mock location, what it changes and when developers use it.

Mock location is a test coordinate supplied by a developer-selected app instead of the device’s normal location sources. It helps teams test location-aware software without physically travelling.

Use responsiblyFlashGo includes developer testing among its stated uses. Receiving apps can detect or reject mocked locations; follow applicable laws and third-party terms.

How it works

Android lets the device owner choose one mock location app in Developer Options. That provider can send coordinates, speed, bearing and accuracy to the location system. Receiving apps may also see that the position is mocked.

What teams test

  • Geofence entry, dwell and exit.
  • Navigation and map camera behavior.
  • Delivery, fleet or ride-state transitions.
  • Fitness and route-import flows.
  • Demos that should not expose a real home or office.

What it does not do

Mock GPS does not change the public IP address, SIM region, account country, Wi‑Fi environment or real satellite conditions. It also cannot guarantee that a third-party service accepts the location.

Common questions

Is mock location illegal?

Legality and terms depend on the use. Use it for apps you own or are authorized to test and follow local law and service rules.

Can apps detect it?

Yes. Android exposes whether a location is mocked, and apps can apply their own policy.
